Popular Question

Clear, straightforward answers to our most popular questions about durability, drying times, maintenance, and project prep.

Wood stains are formulated to darken or change the color tone of timber (such as turning a light oak into a dark walnut). To go lighter, we recommend our specialized lime washing or wood bleaching services.

We sand the timber floors down to raw wood using high-performance, consistent sanding techniques to open up the pores uniformly. We then apply pre-stain wood conditioners to prevent splotching or uneven absorption.

The entire process—including deep sanding, sample testing, hand-applying the stain, and applying 3 protective topcoats—typically takes 3 to 5 days depending on the size of the home.

While dark stains can help mask minor surface discoloration and mismatched boards, they will not hide deep structural water damage or physical gouges. We always recommend repairing damaged boards before staining.

The stain itself does not scratch easily because it is absorbed deep into the wood. However, because the wood beneath a dark stain is naturally lighter, a deep scratch that cuts through the protective topcoat may show up more visibly.

You can stain engineered timber as long as it has a real wood top wear-layer (veneer) that is at least 3mm thick. This allows us to safely sand and stain the surface without wearing through to the plywood core.
