Are water-based finishes as durable as solvent-based polyurethane?
Yes. Modern, commercial-grade water-based finishes are formulated with advanced polymers that match or even exceed the durability of traditional solvent coatings, offering incredible resistance to scratches and scuffs.
How long after application can we walk on water-based finishes?
Water-based finishes dry very quickly. You can typically walk on the floor with light foot traffic just 4 to 6 hours after the final coat is applied, though we still recommend waiting 24 hours before moving furniture.
Will water-based finishes change the color of my timber?
No. Water-based finishes dry completely crystal clear. Unlike oil-based finishes that add a warm, golden-amber hue, water-based coatings preserve the light, raw, and modern look of your timber.
Are water-based finishes eco-friendly and low odor?
Yes, they are highly eco-friendly. They contain exceptionally low VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), meaning they produce virtually no harsh chemical fumes. This makes them ideal for families, pets, and people with respiratory sensitivities.
How many coats of water-based finish do my floors need?
To guarantee long-lasting durability, we apply one specialized sealer/primer coat (to prevent tannin bleed) followed by two to three coats of premium water-based lacquer.
Can I apply a water-based polyurethane over an old oil-based finish?
You cannot apply it directly over the top, as the water-based layer will peel off. To switch to a water-based finish, we must first sand the old oil-based finish completely back to bare wood.
